What it means
A local newspaper links to a business guide on your website. Readers may follow that link, and a search engine may discover the guide through it, while the source and surrounding text help explain why the link exists.
Google Search Central says links are used as a signal of page relevance and a path to finding new pages, and it gives advice about descriptive anchor text, but that does not mean every link has equal weight or a predictable ranking effect. A backlink is external, coming from a different site, while a link between two pages on your own site is an internal link; both can help navigation, but reports should keep them separate.
Context matters, since a link inside a relevant article is different from one hidden in a footer across thousands of pages, and neither is an automatic vote with a fixed numerical value. A fictional bakery earns a link from a city guide listing its opening hours, which may send local visitors who intend to buy, whereas a hundred unrelated directory links may be less useful to those customers.
Anchor text is the clickable wording, and natural, descriptive text helps readers know what they will open, while repetitive keyword-stuffed text can look forced and is less helpful. Some sites mark links with sponsored, user-generated or nofollow attributes, which tell search systems something about the link's nature, so do not assume every backlink is an editorial recommendation.
Paid links intended to manipulate rankings raise search-spam concerns, and Google provides rules for qualifying paid or user-generated outbound links, so buying a package of links can create risk rather than durable traffic. Measurement has limits.
Google Search Console's Links report shows examples of external links and top linked pages, but its help says it is a sample, not a complete list, so a missing link in that report is not proof that no link exists. Reports may also include links that were removed after discovery, so check the current source page before contacting a publisher or claiming a link is live, and remember that ten links from one website are still one linking domain, so link count and linking domains are different measures that neither alone proves quality.
A business can earn relevant links by publishing useful resources, data or local information, and partners may link to genuine collaborations. A fictional software firm publishes a clear integration guide and receives a link from a partner's documentation, which helps users complete a task, so its practical value is not captured only by a domain score.
Referral traffic can be measured in analytics with its own limitations, as an apparent rise may depend on tagging, browser settings or the site's audience, so look for engaged visits and outcomes, not just clicks. Protect what you earn and keep expectations realistic.
A broken target page wastes an earned link, so if a page moves, use an appropriate redirect and check that the new destination matches what the referring page promised, and keep outreach truthful and selective, since a request to correct a broken citation differs from asking an unrelated site to insert an artificial link. Relevance to your business matters more than imitating a competitor's entire profile, and even a strong backlink cannot guarantee a first-page result because ranking depends on many systems and competing pages, so focus on trustworthy references that help real readers rather than accumulating a large number for its own sake.
In practice
Real-world examples.
Example
A city guide links to a local bakery information page. Local visitors click through to check opening hours and the bakery's seasonal menu. Over a month the page records 300 referral visits from the guide, many of them on weekend mornings.
Example
A partner documentation page cites a useful integration guide. Customers of the partner follow the link to finish a setup task. The software firm sees longer visits and fewer support tickets from those users than from general search visitors.
Example
An old external link is repaired after the target page moves. A trade publication linked to an old address that now shows an error page. The site adds a redirect to the new guide and asks the publisher to update the link, so the earned referral traffic returns.
Formula
Calculation
No authoritative backlink-quality formula exists. Useful descriptive counts include unique linking domains, live relevant links and referral visits, each with a stated measurement method.
Worked example (illustrative): a site has 120 live links from 30 unique linking domains.
Average links per linking domain = 120 / 30 = 4, so the raw count overstates how many different sites reference the business.
Referral visits from those links total 1,800 in a month, and 2% of visitors buy, which is 1,800 x 2% = 36 orders.
At an average order of $60, referral revenue is 36 x $60 = $2,160.
These figures describe what the links delivered; they are not a ranking score.Case study
Seen in the real world.
In this fictional case, North Tools publishes a troubleshooting guide. A relevant trade association links to it from a member resource page. The team checks live referral visits and user engagement. It does not promise a particular search position because of one link. The team, an invented business with a small marketing group, measured the guide for three months.
The trade association link brought 450 visits, and 12% of visitors went on to read a second page. Search Console showed the link as a sample example, so the team verified the source page directly. North Tools then audited its other pages for broken targets and found two earned links pointing at removed pages. It redirected them to the closest matching guides. The team recorded which links were live, relevant and sending visitors, and ignored a vendor's single authority score as the main target.
Watch out
Common mistakes.
- Treating all links as equal endorsements.
- Assuming Search Console lists every backlink.
- Buying unrelated links to chase a numeric score.
