What it means

Investing on the difference between the two is the foundation of value investing. Because intrinsic value depends on the future, it is always an estimate rather than a fact.
Small changes in the assumed growth rate or discount rate can move the answer by a wide margin, which is why practitioners calculate a range and insist on a margin of safety before acting. The discipline is in stating your assumptions clearly, not in producing a single confident number.
The most common method is a discounted cash flow model, which forecasts free cash flow for a period, applies a terminal value for everything beyond it, and discounts the whole stream at a rate reflecting the risk of the business. Simpler approaches include the dividend discount model for stable dividend payers and asset-based valuation for property-heavy or liquidating businesses.
Intrinsic value also appears in a narrower, precise sense in options trading, where it means the amount by which an option is currently in the money. A call option to buy at $30 when the shares trade at $34 has an intrinsic value of exactly $4, with anything paid above that being time value.
The two uses share a name and a spirit but not a method. For managers running a private company, intrinsic value thinking is more useful than share-price thinking.
It focuses attention on the durability of cash generation, the reinvestment rate and the cost of capital, all of which are within management's influence, rather than on a market quotation that may be absent or unreliable.

The model produces an enterprise value of around $28,000,000, and after deducting $4,000,000 of net debt the equity is valued at $24,000,000, making the sibling's stake worth roughly $8,000,000. The selling sibling argues for a higher figure based on a recent trade sale in the sector at a much higher multiple, while the remaining siblings point out that the comparable business had twice the customer diversity and no single client above 10% of revenue.

- Treating a model output as a precise fact. Intrinsic value is a range shaped by assumptions, and presenting it to two decimal places creates false confidence.
