What it means
The measure is normally taken by counting a sample of locations or product codes and comparing each one against the record. An item counts as accurate only if it matches exactly or within a tolerance the business has agreed in advance, and partial credit for being close is not usually given.
Accuracy matters because so much else depends on it. Purchasing reorders from the system figure, sales teams promise delivery dates from it, and the finance team values the balance sheet from it, so an error at the shelf becomes an error in three different decisions.
Most warehouses now use cycle counting, where a slice of stock is counted every week rather than shutting the site for one annual count. This gives a continuous accuracy reading, catches problems while the cause is still traceable, and avoids the disruption of a full wall-to-wall count.
There are two versions of the metric and they can disagree sharply. Location or piece accuracy asks what proportion of items matched, while value accuracy weights each discrepancy by its cost, so a warehouse can score 97% on piece accuracy and much worse on value if the errors sit in the expensive lines.

Harrowgate Fixings is an invented builders' merchant used purely as an illustrative example. Its branches carried roughly $6 million of stock, and the annual count regularly produced a write-off between $150,000 and $200,000 that nobody could explain.
A new operations manager introduced weekly cycle counting on the 400 fastest-moving lines and measured accuracy for the first time. The opening figure was 88%, and the pattern was clear: almost all discrepancies came from goods issued to trade customers at the counter without being scanned out before the end of the shift.
Harrowgate changed the till process so that no sale could be completed without a scan, and coached branch staff on why it mattered. Accuracy reached 96% within a quarter and the year-end write-off fell to $40,000. The fictional numbers make a real point: the metric was useful less as a score than as a way of finding where the process leaked.
Watch out
Common mistakes.
- Netting positive and negative discrepancies against each other so the total looks small, which hides the fact that two separate records are both wrong.
- Counting only the easy, slow-moving lines because they are quick to check, which flatters the rate while leaving the busy lines unmeasured.
- Treating the annual stock count as an accuracy measure, when it tells you the error at one moment and gives no clue about where it came from.
