Defining the start and stop points precisely is the first job in any MTTR programme. The business relevance is straightforward: downtime costs money by the hour.
A distribution centre that cannot pick orders, a restaurant with a dead card reader or an online store with a broken checkout all lose revenue continuously while the clock runs, so cutting recovery time has a direct and measurable payback. That makes MTTR one of the few operational metrics finance teams can price with confidence.
Teams improve MTTR by attacking the parts of the clock that are not repair work at all. Holding critical spare parts on site, publishing a clear escalation path and keeping current documentation typically cut more minutes than making the physical repair faster.
Many organisations discover that half of the average incident is spent working out who should be dealing with it. A common variant causes confusion in reporting.
Some organisations use MTTR to mean mean time to respond or mean time to recovery, which measure different things, so a supplier quoting a two hour MTTR may be promising only that someone will start work within two hours. MTTR is also skewed easily by a single bad incident, because one 40 hour outage inside a month of 20 minute fixes drags the average badly. Reporting the median alongside the mean, or splitting incidents by severity, gives a much fairer picture of how recovery is actually going.
