Money-Weighted Return

The money-weighted return calculates the actual growth rate of an investment portfolio, accounting for the exact timing and size of all cash deposits and withdrawals. Unlike simple growth rates, it reveals how well your specific cash management decisions performed over time.

Here, C0 is the initial outlay, C1 to Cn are cash flows at each period, and r is the money-weighted return. For example, if you invest 1,000 pounds, add 1,000 pounds a year later, and withdraw 2,500 pounds after two years, r is the exact discount rate that equates the cash inflows to outflows.
