What it means
A customer cancels a subscription today, but the agreement says service and recurring billing end at the close of the paid term. If the system stops early or generates a new charge afterward, the dates may be wrong.
Subscription cancellation effective-date accuracy compares the authorised effective date with the date applied across billing and access systems. Define the request by recording the verified customer instruction, account and time received, because a support question about cancellation is not necessarily an instruction to cancel, and check that the person requesting the change is permitted to act for that subscription under the provider's process.
Read the terms: immediate, end-of-term and scheduled-date cancellation can each be valid, so apply the customer's authorised choice and the applicable contract or local rule. Separate request and effect, since the cancellation request date, scheduled effective date, access end and final invoice date are different fields.
Consider time zone, because a date-only cancellation at midnight can differ across billing and customer regions, so state the contract and system clock, and track the current term, since a monthly subscription could renew on the anniversary date, not the last calendar day. Handle trials, as trial cancellation may have a different effective date and access rule from a paid subscription.
Check notice periods too: some business contracts require advance notice, so do not silently apply a vendor platform default where the signed agreement differs. Stripe documents immediate and scheduled subscription cancellation options with differing invoicing consequences, and Chargebee documents immediate, end-of-current-term and specific-date cancellation choices.
Their behaviour is platform-specific and should be checked against the customer's terms, which shows why an effective-date rule must be explicit. Review access, because billing cancellation may not immediately revoke product rights if access lasts through a paid period, so verify effective entitlement separately.
Review invoices, since a final invoice can still cover past usage or unpaid amounts after cancellation, and a charge after the effective date is not automatically wrong without examining the covered period and terms. Check proration, because credits or refunds for unused time depend on contract, configuration and applicable local rules, so the date metric alone cannot decide the amount.
Record scheduled state: a subscription marked non-renewing may still be active until term end, so do not treat that status as already cancelled, and avoid duplicate actions so that repeated customer requests do not move the effective date unexpectedly or create several cancellation records. Handle plan bundles by clarifying whether cancellation affects every add-on with separate terms, track amendments by preserving both the original and revised effective dates with a timestamp, and measure at the proper point, since a scheduled cancellation can be configured correctly now but fail when the date arrives.
Use an independent expected date, because comparing two copied fields in the same billing record is not enough, detect early and late effects (an early cutoff can deny paid access, while a late cutoff can trigger unwanted renewal or extra access), and keep open cases separate, since a scheduled date in the future cannot yet be scored. Watch integrations, as product entitlements, customer emails and payment collection may use separate services, preserve evidence for disputes (the verified request, chosen option, effective date, billing history and access history), and treat the metric as a control, since no consent to change any real subscription should be inferred from a glossary example.
In practice
Real-world examples.
Example
A customer cancels today for term end; billing and access end on the verified anniversary date, not immediately.
Example
A service stops access a week before the paid term ends; the case fails an access-end accuracy check.
Example
A final invoice after cancellation covers verified prior usage, so its issue date alone does not prove an inaccurate effective date.
Formula
Calculation
Illustrative matured-case accuracy = cancellation cases whose verified expected end matches actual billing and access end under the stated rule / matured qualifying cancellation cases x 100. Report future scheduled cases and early versus late mismatches separately.
Worked example: a fictional team reviews 120 matured cancellation cases, meaning cases whose effective date has already passed. In 114 of them the billing end and access end match the verified expected date, so accuracy is 114 / 120 x 100 = 95%. The 6 mismatches split into 4 early cutoffs and 2 late ones, and a further 30 cancellations scheduled for future dates are shown separately because they cannot yet be scored.Case study
Seen in the real world.
This entirely fictional case follows Harbor Apps. A customer chose end-of-term cancellation, and the billing record was scheduled correctly, but the product access job ran a day early in another time zone. Harbor restored the remaining paid access and changed its date comparison to use the contract's time-zone rule. The case is not permission to modify a real account or a statement about refund rights.
Watch out
Common mistakes.
- Treating the request date as the effective date without checking the selected option.
- Calling a future non-renewing subscription already ended.
- Assuming any invoice issued later than cancellation is automatically invalid.
Questions
People also ask.
Can a cancellation be scheduled for term end?
Yes, depending on the agreement and authorized choice.
Should access end when the request is received?
Not necessarily. Check the actual effective date and access terms.
Does the metric decide refunds?
No. Credits and refunds require separate term and local-rule review.
