Delivery Accuracy

Delivery accuracy is the share of customer orders delivered exactly as promised: the right items, the right quantity, undamaged and on the agreed date. It is usually expressed as a percentage of total orders delivered in a period.

A high figure means customers get what they expected without needing to contact anyone about it.

What it means

The metric exists because customers judge a delivery on all its attributes at once, not just on whether it arrived. An order that is on time but missing an item has failed, and so has one that is complete but three days late.

Measuring the combination is what makes the number useful rather than flattering. Most businesses define an accurate delivery using four tests: correct items, correct quantity, correct condition and correct date.

Some add correct documentation, which matters in regulated or export contexts. The stricter definition, sometimes called perfect order rate, is harder to hit but far more honest about the customer experience.

Delivery accuracy matters financially because every failure costs money twice. There is the direct cost of redelivery, refunds, replacement stock and the support time to resolve it, and then the indirect cost of a customer who is less likely to reorder.

Repeat purchase rates fall noticeably after a bad delivery experience. Diagnosing a poor score means splitting the failures rather than staring at the headline.

Wrong items usually point to picking or catalogue problems, damage points to packaging or carrier handling, and late arrivals point to dispatch cut-offs or carrier performance. Each has a different owner and a different fix.

The practical warning is that accuracy above roughly 99% gets expensive to improve further. Sensible teams set a target that reflects the value of their orders, then focus remaining effort on failing fast and recovering well, because a well-handled problem can leave a customer more loyal than a delivery that simply went right.

Delivery Accuracy = (Orders Delivered Correctly / Total Orders Delivered) x 100 A homeware retailer delivers 10,000 orders in a month, and 9,450 arrive complete, undamaged and on the promised date. Delivery accuracy is (9,450 / 10,000) x 100 = 94.5%, so 10,000 - 9,450 = 550 orders failed on at least one measure. Each failed order costs an average of $40 in redelivery, refunds and support handling, so the monthly cost of inaccuracy is 550 x $40 = $22,000. After the retailer adds address validation and a packing verification step, failures fall to 200 orders a month, lifting accuracy to (9,800 / 10,000) x 100 = 98% and cutting the cost to 200 x $40 = $8,000. The saving is $22,000 - $8,000 = $14,000 a month, or $14,000 x 12 = $168,000 a year.

Seen in the real world.

Fernwood Home is a fictional online homeware retailer used here purely as an illustrative example. Its delivery accuracy sat at 94.5% across roughly 10,000 monthly orders, and the operations team treated the remaining 550 failures as an unavoidable cost of doing business.

A new operations manager priced the failures instead. At an average $40 each in redelivery, refunds and support time, they were costing $22,000 a month. Breaking the failures down showed that 45% were wrong or incomplete items traced to two similar product codes, and 30% were address errors at checkout.

Fernwood renamed the confusing product codes, added a scan-verify step at packing and introduced address validation at checkout. Failures fell to 200 a month, accuracy reached 98%, and the annual saving of $168,000 dwarfed the $25,000 spent on the changes. The illustrative lesson is that putting a dollar figure on a quality metric is usually what gets it fixed.
