What it means
Markets standardise quantities so that buyers and sellers do not have to negotiate size on every trade. That standard block is the lot, and it exists in equities, futures, options, foreign exchange and physical commodities.
Because the lot is the unit of dealing, position size is normally expressed as a number of lots rather than a raw count of units. In foreign exchange the convention is well established: a standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, a mini lot is 10,000 and a micro lot is 1,000.
Since currency moves are small in percentage terms, these large notional sizes are what make the market worth trading, and they are also what makes it dangerous for beginners who do not translate lots into dollars. Equity markets use round lots, historically 100 shares, with anything smaller called an odd lot.
Fractional and odd-lot trading is now routine for retail investors, but institutional pricing, block trade reporting and some exchange rules still key off the round-lot convention. Outside trading, lot size means the production or purchase batch quantity.
A factory that changes over a machine incurs setup cost each time, so it produces in lots; ordering in larger lots reduces setup and ordering costs per unit but raises the cost of holding inventory. The economic order quantity model formalises that trade-off and is the standard starting point for choosing a purchase lot size.
The key nuance in both worlds is the same: a bigger lot lowers per-unit friction but increases the amount of capital tied up and the loss if something goes wrong.

Example
A new forex trader opens what he thinks is a small position of 5 standard lots. The notional exposure is 500,000 units, and a 1% currency move produces a gain or loss of roughly $5,000 on a $10,000 account.
Example
A packaging manufacturer changes its production lot size from 2,000 to 8,000 units per run. Setup costs per unit fall sharply, but average inventory rises and $180,000 more working capital is tied up on the factory floor.

A trader takes a position of 3 standard lots in a currency pair quoted at 1.0850, where one standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency.
Units = 3 x 100,000 = 300,000
Notional = 300,000 x 1.0850 = $325,500
The value of a single pip, one movement of 0.0001 in the quote, is:
Pip value = 300,000 x 0.0001 = $30
So a 40-pip move against this position costs 40 x $30 = $1,200. If the broker requires 2% margin, the trader posts $325,500 x 0.02 = $6,510 to control that $325,500 position, which is leverage of 50 to 1.Case study
Seen in the real world.
This illustrative and fictional example follows Verdant Loom Textiles, an invented mid-market fabric producer. Its dyeing line took four hours to change colour, so the plant manager set a minimum lot size of 6,000 metres per colour to spread that changeover across as much output as possible.
The policy worked on paper and failed in practice. Customers increasingly wanted small runs of unusual shades, and the 6,000-metre minimum meant the fictional company produced far more of each colour than it sold, ending the year with $740,000 of slow-moving finished stock, roughly a quarter of which was eventually sold below cost.
Verdant Loom invested $310,000 in faster changeover equipment that cut the switch to fifty minutes. The economic lot size dropped to about 1,500 metres, inventory fell by more than half, and the company could quote on the short bespoke runs its competitors were declining.

Common mistakes.
- Treating lots as the risk measure instead of converting them into notional dollars and expected loss per adverse move.
- Assuming a mini lot is a tenth the risk of a standard lot regardless of the leverage attached to the account.
- Choosing a production lot size purely to minimise setup cost, without pricing in the working capital and obsolescence it creates.
